South Africa to Be Excluded from 2026 G20 Summit, Says Trump

(MENAFN) In an escalating diplomatic clash, US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that South Africa will be excluded from the 2026 G20 summit in Florida, arguing the country refused to transfer its G20 presidency to a U.S. Embassy representative.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump defended his earlier decision to skip the recent G20 gathering in South Africa, accusing the nation of refusing “to acknowledge or address the horrific human rights abuses endured by Afrikaners and other descendants of Dutch, French and German settlers.” He further claimed the government is “killing white people and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them.”

Officials in South Africa’s government have repeatedly dismissed the allegations, calling them “factually inaccurate.”

Trump also faulted South Africa’s conduct at the 2025 summit, saying the country “refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a senior representative from our U.S. Embassy.” He added that South Africa “will not be receiving an invitation” to next year’s meeting in Miami.

Escalating further, Trump argued that South Africa is “not a country worthy of membership anywhere” and declared an immediate halt to “all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

In a swift response, the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa called Trump’s statement blocking its attendance at the 2026 G20 sessions “regrettable.”

The presidential office emphasized that South Africa participates in the G20 “in its own name and right,” with its membership supported by all other G20 members. It noted that South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democracy that “does not appreciate insults from another country about its worth in participating in global platforms.”

The statement reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to remaining a “full, active and constructive” participant in the G20. It also maintained that, despite the absence of the U.S. delegation in 2025, all G20 presidency procedures were correctly completed when instruments were handed to a U.S. Embassy official at the headquarters of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

“We call on members of the G20 to reaffirm its continued operation in the spirit of multilateralism, based on consensus, with all members participating on an equal footing in all of its structures.”

Tensions deepened earlier this year when Trump issued Executive Order 14204, directing agencies to support the resettlement of white South African Afrikaners—described as “victims of unjust racial discrimination”—and to suspend U.S. aid to South Africa.

Bilateral strain has also grown since South Africa’s 2023 case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel, a close U.S. ally, of genocide in Gaza.

“It is regrettable that despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President (Cyril) Ramaphosa and his administration to reset the diplomatic relationship with the US, President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country,” the statement added.
